Message Board Guy of the Week

Another classic Colin Cowherd rant is about message board guy.  So at the Church of Cowherd, we are going to deliver a post of a message board guy who was entirely wrong.  Feel free to go to the message board and mock this individual if you like.

This week, message board guy is “the huge one” from the free Rutgers Rivals Football Forum.  On Thursday October 23rd he is quoted as typing

“I have the stats – you have verbal masturbation.

We get pushed around in the box by every BE team…it is just the reality of the situation.

We didn’t loosen up the UConn secondary because our Wrs get no separation.

If you watched the whole game on tape, you would know that.

Go back and watch the game, watch the UConn DL v. our OL and tell me we did not get dominated.

When you find the plays where our OL ourphysicalled them….you let me know.

I already have all the plays where our OL got dominated…so be ready with more than just your delusions.

PS – If Edsell’s kicker did his job, his plan would have worked, isn’t that right???”

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights went on to whip Pittsburgh 54-34 at Heinz Field on homecoming.  Care to take back those words “the huge one?”

The Church of Cowherd Ax, Chapter 1

Filed under: Church of Cowherd Ax, Uncategorized

In our first chapter of the Church of Cowherd Ax, we have selected a coach who has found very little success at his program. Head Coach Chuck Long of San Diego State has an overall record of 8-24, but the record is just the surface of his problems.

Over the three year career of Long the rushing defense stats are as follows:

2006: 180.1 ypg (#106)

2007: 241.8 ypg (#118)

2008: 282.13 ypg (#119)

These numbers are quite amazing as it is yard to get progressively worse when ranked in the triple digits for rushing defense. Giving up 282 rushing yards a game is a guarantee that the season will be unsuccessful. Unless Chuck Long finds a miracle in his defensive line, he should be fired by the end of this year. The Church of Cowherd Ax comes down hard on Chuck Long of San Diego State University.

Most Naive Fanbase, Volume 1

In our first installment of our new segment, we chose the Penn State Nittany Lions as the most naive fanbase.  While we all know that Penn State is very good, I think it is very naive to think they could be better than an undefeated Big XII of SEC champion.  To prove my point, lets look at the run defenses and records of the opponents of Texas, Alabama and Penn State:

Texas

Florida Atlantic – 192 ypg (#103)  -  3 – 5

UTEP – 216.14 (#109)  -  3 – 4

Rice – 172.5 (#88)  -  5 – 3

Arkansas – 168.25 (#85)   – 3 – 5

Colorado – 163.63 (#83)  -  4 – 4

Oklahoma – 105.63 (#20)  -  7 -1

Missouri – 112.88 (30)  -  6 – 2

Oklahoma State – 116.25 (#37)  -  7 -1

The average rush defense of Texas’s opponents is 155.91 and the overall record is 38-25 (60.32%)

Alabama

Clemson – 134.29 (#57)   -  3 -4

Tulane – 135.86 (#59)  -  2 – 5

Arkansas – 168.25 (#85)  -  3 – 5

Georgia – 76.88 (#6)  -  7 -1

Kentucky – 137.38 (#63)  -  5 – 3

Mississippi – 110.88 (#29)  -  4 – 4

Tennessee – 106 (#23)  -  3-5

The average rush defense of Alabama’s opponents is 108.69 ypg and the overall record is 27-27 (50%)

Penn State

Oregon State – 126 (#49)  -  4 – 3

Syracuse – 212.71 (#108)  -  1 – 6

Temple – 142.63 (#67)  -  3 -5

Illinois – 152.38 (#76)  -  4 – 4

Purdue – 175.63 (#92)  -  2 – 6

Wisconsin – 133.25 (#55)  -  4 – 4

Michigan – 126.63 (#50)  -  2 – 6

Ohio State – 104.11 (#18)  -  7 – 2

The average rush defense of Penn State’s opponents is 146.67 ypg and the overall record is 27-36 (42.86%)

Ultimately, being able to stop the run and run the ball is what championship teams do.  The stats for Texas are quite swayed as their early season opponents are very bad against the run.  In the last three weeks, they have played three great teams and beat them all.  Alabama has played the opponents with the best defenses as their opponents only give up an average of 108.69 yards per game.  Penn State has played the opponents with the worst record, .428 winning percentage, and the Nittany Lions have only played one good defense in Ohio State.

Overall, there is no way that the Nittany Lions should be ranked ahead of an undefeated Big XII of SEC team.  While there are still several weeks to play, we feel that if the Big XII and SEC have an undefeated champion, they should meet in the championship game; the numbers do not lie.  Stop being naive Penn State fans.

Week 10 College Football Picks with Commentary

The Church of Cowherd continues to be above 60% on the year picking the television college football games; hopefully this week will not be any different.

South Florida (-3.5) @ Cincinnati

Another Thursday night home dog?  Home many times are we going to see this?  While I might lose this week, there is no way I would ever go against the Bearcats.  The Bulls are coming off a loss, but they lost three in a row last year, so why would this year be any different.  Take Cincinnati (+3.5)

Miami (-1) @ Virginia

Virginia has played very well the last few weeks and they are a home underdog again!  You guys know how much I like home underdogs and I don’t see any difference in this game.  It is a long way from Coral Gables to Charlottesville and it is a noon kick off.  Take the Cavaliers (+1) for the third straight week.

Wisconsin @ Michigan State (-6)

Wisconsin is coming off a win versus Illinois and Michigan State is coming off a victory versus a lowly Michigan team.  I am not convinced that Michigan State can consistently stop the run and Wisconsin will use the rushing attack to keep this game close.  I like the Badgers to cover 6.

Georgia vs Florida (-5.5)

The entire Georgia team ran into the endzone and celebrated after their first touchdown last year against Florida.  They went on to embarrass the Gators in Jacksonville for the first time in a long time.  This year Meyer and Tebow get revenge as they push the Bulldogs around, especially with the makeshift offensive line Georgia is working with.  The Gators (-5.5) will win this one easy.

Tennessee @ South Carolina (-6)

Spurrier has been making Fulmer look bad with much less talent for years.  It will not change this year as the Gamecocks will use their defense to their advantage and put a young Tennessee quarterback in bad positions all night.  The Gamecocks (-6) will cover this one in Williams-Brice Stadium at night.

Nebraska @ Oklahoma (-21.5)

Oklahoma has yet to prove to me that they can stop anyone from scoring.  While they score MUCH more than their opponents, they need to have defensive stops much more often.  I see the Nebraska offense scoring a great amount of points in the game and keeping it relatively close until late in the game.  Did I mention this was a rivalry game?  Take Nebraska (+21.5)

Florida State @ Georgia Tech (pk)

I love Georgia Tech but the fact that this is a pick game worries me greatly.  Bobby Bowden will make sure that his team knows that and they will go into Atlanta and stop the run game of Georgia Tech.  FSU has one of the best run defenses in the nation, so I see them stuffing the option and causing turnovers.  Take the Seminoles anytime they are not favored.

Washington @ USC (-39)

Name your score!  Pete Carroll just came off a close game in which his team did not play great.  They will be playing a Washington that has quit on Ty WIllingham and the game is in the Coliseum.  Another 69-0 would not surprise me as USC sweeps the state of Washington in blowout fashion.  Take the Trojans (-39).

Pittsburgh @ Notre Dame (-7.0)

Charlie Weis knows how to beat Dave Wannstedt and if he forgot, Rutgers gave the the blueprint last week.  I knew that Pittsburgh would fall soon and this is the slide that all logical fans expected.  Notre Dame’s offense gets better each week and they will cover easy in South Bend this weekend.

Texas (-5.5) @ Texas Tech

Four straight week Texas will have played a top 15 team.  I think it finally catches up to them as this is their first true road game.  Micheal Crabtree is, by far, the best receiver in college football and Texas Tech will look to show they nation they are for real.  Take Texas Tech +5.5 in Lubbock.

Week 9 College Football Picks Wrap Up

Once again, the Church of Cowherd picked the winner of the Thursday Night game, putting us at 7-2 on Thursday Night games for the year.  We felt confident that our winning percentage would hold up this as we made some solid picks.

The only noon game was picked was that of Illinois @ Wisconsin which was an easy Badgers cover.  Going into a huge slate of 3:30 games at 2-0 felt good.  The 3:30 games were once again huge for us as we saw Georgia beat LSU, as predicted, we saw UVa cover Georgia Tech easily, and FSU pushed Virginia Tech around.  That put us at 5-0, but Michigan once again did not cover, leaving us at 5-1.

TCU is the real deal as shown in the Week 8 Church of Cowherd BCS Standings; they throttled Wyoming leaving us at 5-2 with the late games left.  Alabama physically dominated Tennessee as expected and Charlie Weis made Ty Willingham look silly.  The only night loss was Penn State beating Ohio State, but overall the record was 7-3.

That leaves the Church of Cowherd at 55-33-2 (62.5%) on the year.

Who Will Replace Phillip Fulmer Who Steps Down?

Inside sources at the Tennessee program have told the Church of Cowherd that Phillip Fulmer, the University of Tennessee Volunteers coach, will step down shortly and there will be a nationwide coaching search.  The announcement of the step down will be contingent on the preformance of the Volunteers over the next few game.  Some of the names that have come up as the Tennessee coach include Lane Kiffen and John Gruden.  Any thoughts?

Georgia Tech with ACC Title in reach

At the beginning of the year, it was stated by the Church of Cowherd that Georgia Tech would soon be an ACC title contender solely because of Paul Johnson.  What we did not realize is that it wouldn’t even take a full year for this to happen.  Threw seven games, Georgia Tech is 6-1 with their only loss at Lane Stadium to Virginia Tech.  The Yellow Jackets sit atop the ACC Coastal division with four ACC games remaining.  Three of the four remaining games are at home and there is a strong chance that they can win the Coastal division with just three of four wins in those games; possibly even two wins.

We at the Church of Cowherd knew that Paul Johnson would find a way to dominate the line of scrimmage, but that stats in his first year are mind boggling.

Rushing Offense – 248.14 ypg (#9 nationally)

Rushing Defense – 101.29 ypg (#19 nationally)

Tackles for Loss – 9 per game (#1 nationally)

Total Defense – 257.57 ypg (#5 nationally)

Scoring Defense – 11.57 (#5 nationally)

What is quite scary is that this is a team that Paul Johnson inherited; what is possibly going to happen when he loads up with his recruits?

Colin Cowherd’s Week 9 Wheel of Genius

Another week of picking games for Colin Cowherd is as follows:

Kentucky @ Florida (-26) – The line has moved almost six points this week and that is way too much.  Rich Brooks of Kentucky limits big plays which will slow the Florida offense down.  Kentucky leads the SEC in scoring defense and will keep the game within the spread.  Florida – 33  Kentucky -14

Alabama (-5) @ Tennessee – Alabama has the much better team and the much better coach.  Tennessee is 1-8 in the last 9 games when hosting a top 10 team in Neyland Stadium.  Alabama will take the crowd out early and control the Volunteers.  Alabama – 27  Tennessee – 17

Oklahoma State @ Texas (-12.5) – This game is Texas’s 3rd of 4 straight games against top 15 opponents.  Oklahoma State has held very powerful offenses in check and will have a game plan to at least slow down the Longhorns.  16 starters for Oklahoma State are from the state of Texas and were passed up by the Longhorns so they will be playing with a chip on their shoulders.  Texas – 36  Oklahoma State – 28

USC (-16) @ Arizona – Arizona at home at night is a very good team; they have won three straight home games versus ranked opponents.  It will be a competitive game in which Arizona covers.  USC – 31  Arizona – 20

Penn State (-2.5) @ Ohio State – The Buckeyes continue to dominate one dimenionsional teams but Penn State is not one dimensional.  A mature Penn State team will not be intimidated by The Horseshoe.  The trends of the last fifteen years do not matter as the players on this Penn State team were not on all those teams that last in Columbus.  PSU – 26  OSU – 19

Overall Colin has:

Kentucky +26 @ Florida – not picked

Alabama (-5) @ Tennessee – Agree

Oklahoma State (+12.5) @ Texas – not picked

USC @ Arizona (+16) – not picked

Penn State (+2.5) @ Ohio State – Disagree

Thursday Reaction:

Once again the Church of Cowherd was correct in their Thursday Night Football prediction.  Our record on Thursday night is now 7-2.  I am not sure what is wrong with Auburn, but it needs to be fixed very soon or Alabama is going to make them look silly.
